Andrew Wyeth
(1917-2009)
Born in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. The youngest child of well-known artist and illustrator Newell Convers Wyeth. He was educated by his parents at home, receiving his early training from his father. When Wyeth was seven years old, New Mexico artist, Peter Hurd, came to study with Wyeth for two years. It was Hurd who acquainted the young Wyeth with the Egg Tempura Technique used so frequently in his mature works. At 16, Wyeth saw paintings by Winslow Homer for the first time and that artist’s influence can be seen in Wyeth’s early style. Wyeth’s paintings tend to be traditional imagery translated into somber tonal statements. Today, Wyeth continues to work and live in both Chadds Ford and Maine, and is considered to be America’s most popular artist.
